Neck pain – Headaches

Welcome To Hermann Wellness: Your Solution for Neck Pain

Understanding Neck Pain

Neck discomfort is a common issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes moving hard. As a chiropractor at Hermann Wellness in Bloomington, Illinois, I specialize in diagnosing the pain generator. Our neck pain treatment will help you regain your quality of life. Neck pain relief is what we do.

Neck pain can arise from various sources, including:

  • Muscles and Ligaments: Strain or sprain in the neck muscles and ligaments often results from poor posture, repetitive movements, or sudden trauma.
  • Spinal Degeneration: Age-related wear and tear can lead to spinal degeneration, causing pain and stiffness in the neck.
  • Disc Injury: Herniated or bulging discs can compress nerves, leading to significant neck pain and discomfort.
  • Facet Problems: Issues with the facet joints, which connect the vertebrae, can cause pain and limit neck mobility.

Pain Generating Areas in the Neck

Muscles and Ligaments

You can think of ligaments as masking tape that wraps the neck vertebrae. Ligaments are the first thing after the bone.

Muscles are farther out, on top of the ligaments. Muscles move you. Ligaments keep you from moving too far.

If your neck goes too far, (think whiplash-type injury,)  the ligaments will tear. This will generate pain.

Below is an X-ray of a neck with a normal curve. Underneath is an X-ray with an altered neck curve after an injury.

Chiropractic adjustments will provide neck pain relief for this change in your curve.

Spinal Degeneration

Your neck is a mechanical structure. After an injury to your neck, the mechanics are changed. Forces put on your neck, even the weight of your head, are changed. These abnormal forces will cause your neck joints to wear out or degenerate. Signs of this will show up on an X-ray. An alteration in the normal forward neck curve or disc thinning is the most common. Later spurs will form on the edges of the vertebrae.

Fortunately, we are experts at diagnosing,  treating, and relieving neck pain.

Chiropractic is very effective at neck pain relief. Many studies show this effectiveness.

Pinched Nerve Causing Neck Pain

Some nerves that come out of your spine go into your arm. When those nerves get pinched, you can have numbness, tingling, or pain radiating down the arm.

When this happens, neck muscles will tighten, causing pain. Commonly, pain will radiate between the shoulder blades.

The pinch can come from a disc herniation. If the disc degenerates, the two vertebrae come closer together and can pinch the nerve.

Whatever the cause, chiropractic treatment can reduce the inflammation around the nerve, reducing symptoms.

Facet Irritation

Facets: These are the small joints located between and behind adjacent vertebrae. Facet joint pain is often described as a deep, aching pain in the neck. The pain is one-sided. The neck discomfort a facet joint generates is usually about the size of a quarter. Chiropractic treatment is very successful in treating back pain from facet joint irritation. Chiropractic manipulation is very gentle and easy.

Facet joints are often aggravated by:

  • Extending your neck backward or looking up.
  • Rotating to the affected side.
  • Pushing on the affected facet joint about one inch to the side of your spine.
